Dominar 250 WILL Arrive Very Soon
Bajaj is on a launching spree with a host of BS6 updates coming in the next few months under the KTM, Pulsar and Dominar moniker. As per the latest buzz, the 2020 Bajaj Dominar 400 with a BS6-compliant engine will be launched in the Indian market after April this year.
Bajaj Dominar BS6 is expected to be launched in the coming weeks in India. It will come with a minor price hike.
In addition to this, the brand has recently launched its first-ever electric scooter by the name Bajaj Chetak. The brand will launch the BS6 model of the Dominar 400 (Dominar 250) after the implementation of the new emission norms in the country on April 1, 2020.
The launch of the 2020 Bajaj Dominar 400 has been delayed as the brand does not want to make a BS6 model compete with the heavily-discounted BS4 models available in the market.
Commenting on the launch of BS6 compliant variants in the brand’s portfolio, Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto stated – “We have a robust pipeline of launches for the next 18 months. Our problem is sequencing. These are Husqvarna, high-end KTMs, Dominars, Pulsar and other variants. One might see a lull between now and April, though there are a couple of introductions and an accelerated product introduction after April 2020.”
A while ago, we contemplated whether we would see a Bajaj Dominar 250 sometime soon. Certain spy shots of a Dominar test mule were the trigger for this discussion, but we don’t have to rack our brains deciphering those pictures anymore. Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj has pretty much confirmed that a Dominar 250 is on its way and will be arriving soon.
Bajaj Dominar 250 BS6 on test in Pune ahead of launch
Major automotive brands operating in the country are busy updating their range to the upcoming BS6 emission norms ahead of the deadline of April 1, 2020. Some brands have also taken this opportunity to launch new products rather than limiting the updates to the emissions department.
The new Bajaj Dominar is one such example. It is still a BS4 product, but Bajaj Auto claims it to be ‘BS6-ready’ — meaning it can be updated to BS6 standards without any major hassle. Now, Bajaj Dominar BS6 has been spied testing by automotive enthusiast Prem Kumar.
Visually, the test mule is similar to the current 2019 model. But on closer inspection, you notice that there are a few changes. This includes
- Smaller tyres
- Different alloys
- Box type swing-arm
- Different chain cover
- Smaller disc brake in the front.
Is this the all new Bajaj Dominar 250 or is it a low cost variant of the Bajaj Dominar 400?
Current Bajaj DOminar 400 is available only in two shades: Vine Black and Aurora Green. Bajaj fans are hoping to see more colour choices in the months to come and the launch of the Dominar BS6 is the perfect opportunity for the Indian motorcycle brand to introduce the same.
In comparison to the original version, the BS6-ready Bajaj Dominar is expected to be richer in performance and equipment. The 373cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder boasts of 39bhp (up from 34.5bhp) and 35Nm of torque, and is mated to a 6-speed transmission via a slipper clutch. This has been achieved by an upgraded ECU unit and an all-new exhaust system (which sounds really good as well).
The 248.8cc motor in question produces 29.91PS and 24Nm in the Duke. Now, the larger Dominar is down on output when pegged against the 390 Duke, but the 250 Duke’s motor is actually quite refined, stress-free and in a relaxed state of tune, quite unlike the 390’s ‘tuned to the ragged edge’ approach. For this reason, it’s quite possible that the Dominar 250 will have output very close or even identical to its corresponding KTM sibling.
While the quarter-litre Duke looks quite a lot like its older sibling from a distance, closer inspection will reveal that it misses out on the 390’s LED headlight and TFT display. This has been done to keep costs down, so we could see the Dominar 250 miss out on an LED headlight for the same reason.
Often times, updating to higher emission standards come at the cost of reduced output since the process is, in a way, similar to choking the engine. However, in the case of the BS6-compliant Dominar you see here, output figures will most likely remain the same and give justice to its ‘BS6-ready’ tag. The updated Bajaj Dominar has been vastly improved in many key areas; especially in terms of vibration, refinement, heating, styling, and of course, performance. In other words, the latest Bajaj Dominar is ironed-out in almost all respects.
The Bajaj Dominar is an excellent tourer in its price segment and has got a lot of fans across the nation. At an ex-showroom price of around Rs 1.90 lakh, the Bajaj Dominar 250 also locks horns with its Austrian sibling, KTM 390 Duke. Other rivals include the TVS Apache RR 310 and the BMW G 310 R. If it is indeed the Bajaj Dominar 250, it could get the engine from KTM Duke 250.
Should I buy a Dominar 400 2019 now or wait until the BS6 normal rolls out?
Waiting for better models is unending game. Even if you buy a good bike in 2020, there will be new bikes in 2021, 2022 and so on! So it doesn’t matter – if you want it now, go for it now!
